Planning a Vacation In Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok is the largest city in Thailand and has several districts that are friendly to tourism. It is the capital of the country and holds an estimated ten million people. The districts of Bangkok include Sukhumvit, Silom, Rattanakosin, Thonburi, Phahonyothin and Ratchadaphisek. Thailand is one of the most popular destinations worldwide and Bangkok is certainly a city representative of Thai culture. How can you go about planning your trip?

Bangkok has much to offer in the way of hotel and resort accommodation, including some of the best-reviewed hotels in the entire world. Some of the most well known locations in the city include Khao San Road, the riverside by Rattanakosin and Sukhumvit Road. Some of the top names among hotels are The Oriental and The Peninsula, along with the conveniently located Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel and the Grand Millennium Sukhumvit Hotel in the Central area. If you are interested in a full hotel and resort experience then try the Queen`s Garden Resort At Riverview Bangkok. This hotel offers a full vacation, including amenities such as Internet access, a bar and restaurant, and authentic Thai massages and a taxi service to the Bangkok City Center.

Food, Drink and Dining In Bangkok, Thailand

Bangkok cooking is synonymous with Thai food, that spicy treat known all around the world. Bangkok has plenty of Thai restaurants, but also includes many international cuisine restaurants for varied tastes. Prices for eating out may seem high to Thai locals but is still cheap by international costs. The most expensive eating you will find in hotels, along with a few high-end restaurants. There are Phad Thai and curry shops all over the city, as well as restaurants that make Tom Yum Goong, a very tasty soup. You can also find many street vendors selling satay and hot sauce for cheap. Don't be alarmed if you see bugs for sale-many Thai locals and tourists enjoy eating deep fried, nutritious insects with soy sauce! Chances are if you see scorpions, water beetles, mealworms, grasshoppers, crickets or bamboo larvae for sale it's not for domestic purposes. Some of the best areas for Thai dining are Sukhumvit Road and Khao San Road.

When it comes to drinking, Thailand is notorious for having a little too much fun. It may comfort (or disappoint you) to know that Bangkok's nightlife has been toned down in recent years, thanks to new restrictions on closing times for restaurants and bars. (Now closed before 1 or 2 am) If you can't wait to have a drink, try and find some of the informal sidewalks around the lower Sukhumvit, which stays open all night long. Don't be alarmed to see police raid Thailand bars. You're not in any trouble for drinking, though you may be subjected to a random drug test and will be expected to present ID, visa or passport information. Some popular nightclub districts include Patpong and Silom, which has many establishments including go-go bars and bar restaurants like Vertigo and Sirocco, which have an open-air rooftop. Thailand is a very liberal country, so expect to find a good share of adult nightclubs, both gay and straight, around the Silom area, such as the Nana Entertainment Plaza, Soi Cowboy, Zeta and Shela and Balcony.

Attractions in Bangkok

There is plenty to see and do in Bangkok! Many of the best sightseeing attractions can be found on Rattanakosin Island, the "Old City." Some historical sites include the Wat Arun Temple of Dawn, the Grand Palace also known as the The Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and Wat Pho. What can you do for fun in Bangkok? Cycling is a popular activity and is good exercise while you visit parks, temple complexes and markets. There are also cycling tours if riding around the city alone doesn't appeal to you.

You can also enjoy spa and massage treatment, with a distinctly Thai touch. Most hotels in the area offer spa treatments, massages, and even cosmetic surgery. Though the treatment is first class, the costs for pampering are far less than westerners are used to paying. Some of the best-reviewed spa treatment establishments include the Deverana at Dusit Thani, the Banyan Tree and The Oriental. If you feel you haven't splurged enough, then try The Oriental-the hotel resort offers a 6-hour Romance package for two, which costs over $500.00-that's US dollars! Other activities include golfing and taking a comfortable cruise, such as a cruise down by the Chao Praya River. The Five Temples Tour lets you take in the history of various Thai temples as a guide explains the significance of what you are viewing.

To get around Bangkok you have a choice of many transportation options, including buses and taxis and the train system that operate around the city center. The two prominent train systems are the Bangkok Skytrain (which is a tourist attraction in itself) and the Bangkok Metro. You can also travel by canal boats or by the Chao Phraya Express Boat, which is the eastern equivalent of an aquatic bus. If you want to see all of Thailand through one city, then Bangkok has enough personality to suit you!
